1. I thought is was cool that Echo is an operative because she choose to "sell" five years of her life. Apparantly because she was in some form of trouble. I can't wait to find out what kind of trouble.
2. I like Topher. His flaw of "overprogramming" the operatives as in Echo's asthma and eyesight hints of a geek in a toystore.
3. I think that, or did I read that, Echoes past will manifest itself in combination with her programming. Both metaphorically and literally.
4. What's up with the Amy Acker character? My theory is she got the scars in her former roll as an operative leaving both her face and her psyche scared.
ildjarn
- I liked Topher too.
- Amy's character's screentime was too short to form a proper opinion.I totally missed the scarring by the way.
- I liked Echo from the beginning
- Tahmoh's character is a bit underdeveloped right now, I'm not sure what to think of him.

My thoughts, from my LJ:
Quote:
First of all, I have to express how freaking AWESOME it was to see the credits pop up at the beginning, with a "Created by Joss Whedon" and "Written and Directed by Joss Whedon" on-screen *squees* It's been SO LONG! Not to mention that the other people whose names appeared as producers and the like are all part of his old band of Merry Men (and Women), which just gave me a sense of nostalgia for his old shows, and added to the happiness, so YAY! I'M SO HAPPY HE'S BACK!
Onto the show itself. One of my immediate thoughts when the episode finished was "oooooooh!" Contructive and eloquent, as you can tell But seriously, the ending was so intriguing and left the way open for a few theories already on what might be in-store this season, that I'm already hooked! I was talking to Euan, my tv buddy from uni, about who the guy could've been, and he's convinced that it's an escaped active who's gone crazy but is trying to find Echo and/or his way back to the Dollhouse. Which y'know, didn't even occur to me XD But judging from the nakedness and the dead bodies, he might be onto something! Honestly, I can't wait to find out either way.
I thought the pilot was a bit slow in some places, mainly with the exposition and when people were explaining things, but then it IS a pilot, and it was setting up the whole premise of the show for the rest of the season, so it's to be expected. The premise itself is so intriguing, and I think the whole idea of wiping someone's personality and giving them temporary transplants is crazy, but fascinating! I'm excited about the different types and varieties of characters we'll see the actives play as a result, and especially Echo. Eliza Dushku was decent and fairly good at playing her, but because I'm so used to her performance as Faith, it was a bit weird for me, haha. I thought it was inevitable that all of her characters had an edge of feistiness in them! But she was cool overall, I really liked her.
It makes me laugh that the main woman who seems to be in charge of the whole Dollhouse operation is British. Of course the baddie would be a snobby English bint Oh, and Amy Acker! Her character was so weird, and a bit unsettling. She plays creepy well XD I'm intrigued by her role, I wonder what it involves. As for the others - Echo's handler could be someone I end up liking, but the scientific slightly nerdy guy who actually wipes/installs their memories is a bit annoying. And the police officer, Paul - well, he's nice-looking But seriously lol, I'm also intrigued by his character, and his whole investigation into Dollhouse, that looks like it could be interesting!
I'm just really intrigued, in general, haha. This kinda show is different from what Joss has done before, even though he has done sci-fi, but this isn't the same kind, and weirdly enough, there was a lack of trademark Whedon humour, which surprised me! Maybe that's still to come, but anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing where the show goes, I have no doubt it's going to be AWESOME.
So long as it doesn't get cancelled. Seriously FOX, I'm looking at you here. Don't you even dare.
ildjarn
Jane Espenson is going to write at least one episode, so hopefully there'll be some Espenson humour in it.
My current opinion on the FBI guy is that Tahmoh Penikett plays him a bit cardboardy. And I don't mean the good Cardboardy-from-here-cardboardy, but ... flat. Almost emotionless.

Well that would work with Wynter's friend's escaped-active theory. I like that theory, Wynter, it hadn't occured to me but it's given me things to think about.
I'm very intrigued by Amy Acker's character too, she was very creepy, but I can't wait for her story to be revealed. I had the same theory as you Beagle.
I'm so excited about this show, I know that we can count on Joss to have the story and characters to develop over time, and to throw in things we totally don't expect. Not to mention that any one of our favourite characters could be unexpectedly killed off at any moment!
I trust Joss to keep things exciting.
I was impressed with Eliza's acting in the pilot. Her character at the start, before her memory was wiped (I'm trying to remember her name, and my brain is telling me Caroline. Is that right?) felt very Faithy, so my first reaction was oh no, same old character, but once she got into the new personas she was great.

did anyone use that link for watching dollhouse online? and does anyone want the link for episode 2?

Yes, I watched it through that megaupload link, and I'd love the link for #2. All the official sites I've tried require you to be in the US to be able to watch it online.
Well, Amy's scarring is revealed (and I noticed it this time). I liked this episode more than the first one, it was a lot more action. Still don't see how about anyone can find Dollhouse to hire them, but the FBI can't. Especially if they have helicopters and a small army.
And some more random notes:
- Badger was cool, as usual.
- For some reason Echo's handler reminds me of the Operative from Serenity.
- Echo's flashbacks are intriguing.
TwoToGo-Grave
I like the second episode a lot more than the first, and I really think that the show will pick up steam like crazy when Echo inevitably begins to regain memories and whatever (it sure looks to be headed in that direction, after all). I can't wait to see every episode before the show gets canceled. Oh, and a thought: I've been continuously running the show (and T-TSC) on Hulu (it's a U.S. only site, sadly) trying to do my part to bump the view count, thinking that FOX may look at online views when deciding the fate of the show. Does that sound to dumb or pointless?
beagle
Yes, good episode. Didn't they even say the Alpha broke in to the data bases and downloaded all the worst stuff into himself. I took that as meaning he was an active, I mean they have a file on him and everything.
Isn't Echo's handler the guy who does the voices for those annoying Allstate commercials. But, I like him too, the character
I don't think he really was but the villion from the 2nd episode, the jerk with the bow, he reminded me of the villion from Reptile Boy?

That would be this guy, Dennis Haysbert:

Graar. Seriously, is all I have to say to that. I feel your pain.
Anyway, back to the actual thread, I just realised I've done a lot of squealing at my sister but not a lot at you guys. So here goes. Sqqqqqqqqqueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Yeah, amazing. It's been too long since Joss's name popped up as 'CREATOR'. (in my head, that creator was read by the dramatic voice-over guy. Just so, you know, you get the full, intended effect)
I didn't care for Rayna at all. Paul got a bit more interesting though. And Victor as a doll was somewhat surprising.

Hm hm hm. Nope, worst episode of the three.

I thought Victor as a doll as extremely surprising and cool. And I strongly agree with your assessment of it being the worst one of the three so far. Oh, and I thought that Rayna was annoying and not somebody that the viewer could care about. And just overall, I think the story was a tad ludicrous and boring. I have much confidence that the show will improve from here, though

That was absolutely awesome, but I still think it was a very weak episode, personally. I also really like the increased menace from the 'head of security', and I loved Topher's line of 'one of us is a genius and one of us is a security guard.' And Eliza Dushku's singing was surprisingly great. But overall I thought the episode was a letdown after the previous week. I certainly expect the show to get to a point of greatness, though.
And, do we really have to use spoiler tags in a thread that is marked with (Spoilers) in the title? Just curious.

Much agreed.
beagle
I agree about the spoiler tag not needed EXCEPT if it is a spoiler that has to do with an episode yet to be aired please.
Yes, I agree the subject of this episode wasn't my fave. I care nothing for pop stars but on a positive note.
Eliza can sing? Cool.
The increasing awareness that Echo thinks "outside of the box" when programmed as an active agent.
Topher is the Willow of this series. His thirst for knowledge will come to bad at some point. May have already with Alpha and even Echo.
I love that Victor is a doll.
Then Echo, and apparantly Sierra having some awareness of their real selves in their fuge states is intriguing.
Sexual tension between Echo and Sierra??? hmmmm

After the singing by cast in Whedon's other shows, I'm assuming that it was Eliza Dushku. Would it not be?
beagle
Sounded like her to me but you know they can do amazing things with computers, I mean, listen to the radio.
No, really, I mean her performance wasn't perfect (perfect singing is over-rated by the way, I find it boring and lacking of character) I can totally believe it was really her. Especially with some post production help.
Great episode this week (easily the best yet, I think.) I really love what they did, and I greatly hope that the rest of the season can be that good. Of course, I'm confident that it will be.

I finally had time to watch 1.04 tonight, so I clicked on the link and .... it's deleted .
Much agreed. That's two very strong outings in a row. Good sign. Oh, and the ratings were up a little bit this week, which is also good news.
NotFadeAway
This last episode was sooooo amazing. I honestly didn't think Dollhouse was capable of having an episode that strong.
Now I'm really, really excited about the rest of the season and series.
cardboardy
agreed, i thought it was pretty darn tootin... i watched it twice just to experience that scene between paul and whatshisname in the house with the champagne... wow.
i really like where this show is going and although its funny having a central character (echo) who we cant really connect with, i am so invested in her. i think its actually paul ballard who anchors me to her via this mystery of caroline and her voluntary abduction.
oh wow.
and also the doctor fred and her story... shes so definitely an active, i just know it. also, pauls neighbour, i really thought she was going to die so i was glad when i found out she was an active. i guess that means she'll play a key role in infiltrating the dollhouse.
so there are sleeper agents, and there are dollhouses all over the world. there truly are no limits for where this show can go
pls pls pls fox give us a second season!
insaneinthebasement
Wow. That episode was good. Really good.
I was really glad Paul's neighbour (Millie/Molly/Mellie?) didn't die as well, I really thought she was going to and I realised I actually really like her so I was so glad she turned out to be a butt-kicking active (although it did leave me wondering what was going to happen with the messages on her answering machine.
I think it's Echo's keeper who anchors it for me (I've realised that I don't know most of their names, I've been thinking of Paul as Helo and Amy Acker as Fred, I'll have to work on this), even though I'm not sure he'll turn out to be a good guy, he seems to have a good heart.
So it's all getting pretty exciting hey?! There's storyline-threads going all over the place and it's only a matter of time before they all come back together.
We know there's at least two Dollhouse insiders leaking information (one sent Paul Caroline's photo and the film and one programmed Echo to talk to him). Anyone have any theories? We know that it can't have been Topher or Echo's keeper who sent the Echo-gram. Well I suppose it could have been Topher, but it's obviously set up to make us think it wasn't. And I guess intern-sandwich-girl is high on the list of suspects.
Interesting that you think Dr Fred's an active, cardboardy. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right. I've been thinking that Topher's gotta be one.
I guess any of them could be actives, or all of them. I mean, why would you take a job that you can be pretty sure you won't be allowed to retire happily from?
So much information in one episode, I think I'll have to go back and watch it again.
Did you somewhere to watch it ildjarn/anyone else who's been following my links? My internet wasn't working all weekend so I wasn't able to post the link. I had a look at that watchdollhouse site, but the links were already dead by the time I got there.
Ok so ep 7 was a bit confusing at first, but once I got into it I loved it. It seems the drama-of-the-week episodes are finally over and done with and we have reached the good bits. *cheer*
"Have you seen my drawer of inappropriate starches?" OMG Topher is now definitely my favourite character. Has anyone else noticed how much he thinks about food?
Also, enter Evil Corporation! I like it.

Big +1 to that. Topher is the stone nuts.
Mel
Topher kicks ass......i am just loving him and the nerdyrific ways LOL
I really enjoyed the last episode.....De Witt bouncing on the trampoline shouting 'tell him I said Hi'........LOL
We are also learning more about Caroline's back story which is good, and I also like the end where they got a new active in pretty much the same way as they got Caroline/Echo and from the same place.
MysteryEND
I thought Dollhouse was a little slow to start with but now its finally getting exciting.
I loved the last episode. Everything is coming togther now
BepperGirl
Topher's weird. I like some of his lines, like the running metaphor in the first episode. And the "man reactions." Oh that had me howling.
But I still can't really get behind him.
It's all very confusing for me.
Anyway, every week, they keep outdoing themselves. It's great. Anyone want to rewatch DeWitt's interactions with or conversations about Victor before this ep to see if there were any clues there?

Spoiler:
I loved last night's episode. Alpha is the nuts and so cool and creepy. Heh, he is a leaf on the wind.
I can't wait to see where this goes...that's right, we can't because the Fux broadcasting network will cancel it.
Spoiler:
Oh, and I now forsee Ballard having to say the following to Alpha should they meet again...

episode 11 spoilers
Spoiler:
Alright! Alan Tudyk is so great! He really brought a lot of life to the show in just one episode. Oh, the part where he was walking down the stairs! It killed me!
The reveal at the end wasn't a surprise for me, unfortunately, because I read an Alpha spoiler a couple of weeks ago. Gotta say though, I was not expecting Alpha and Echo to run away together.
And so Ballard and Echo seem to have swapped places, Ballard is in and Echo is out.
I wonder if this means Ballard will be continuing on his search for Echo, only this time with him as the active. I see the next episode is called Omega, so maybe that will be his name. Although technically Omega doesn't fit with the pattern of the other doll's names, Alpha, Echo, Mike, November, Sierra and Victor are all from the NATO radio alphabet, whereas Omega is a Greek letter.
Oh but that reminds me! Did anyone else notice Dominic, saying "Whiskey"? Dr Saunders said straight away, "he wants a drink", but it sounded to me a lot like he was saying it to Saunders as though it was her name. He was pleading, first saying Topher, then Adele, then turned to Saunders and said Whiskey. And Whiskey IS one of the NATO radio letters.
Oh and poor Victor getting his face cut up too, he's one of my favourite characters, I hope this doesn't mean he'll be booted.
So hurrah for Alan Tudyk and fingers crossed for a second season!!
BepperGirl
In response to insane:
Spoiler:
Interesting theorising, I have heard the thought that Saunders is a Doll, but not through that (or at least no one explicitly said that). One thing I do know from being a huge fan of Christopher Pike's novel The Starlight Crystal is that Alpha is the first Greek letter and Omega is the last Greek letter so it's like the quote "I am the first and the last." Makes me think some big changes will be happening in the next ep!
