Music Randomonium

Basically anything musically related.

What is everyones favorite band?
NotFadeAway

Good thread Mystery (and welcome back.)

My favorite band is easily Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Even though they're not bands I would have to put Shooter Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., Pat Green, among others, right behind them.
Oh, and even though she'd seem out of place with the people I listed, I also really love Kasey Chambers.
Wynter

Are ya kidding? I almost always find it impossible to pick a favourite band and/or artist, because there's just so many I love!

Including:

My Chemical Romance
Linkin Park
LostProphets
Explosions In The Sky
Rise Against
Billy Talent
Seth Lakeman
Patrick Wolf

And then there's specific albums that I adore, but then I don't know too much about the rest of that band's music.
MysteryEND

I have had Fallen Leaves by Billy Talent stuck in my head all day.

My favorite bands at the moment

The Dresden Dolls
Tegan & Sara
and Underoath

I have an odd obsession with Tegan & Sara at the moment
greengirl00

Hmm.. =D listy opportunity

My favourite bands... um...

The Wombats
KT Tunstall (Went to see her last Thursday WAS AMAZING)
The Killers
The Calling
The Feeling
Greenday
Nickleback

and more... but I ran out of listy enthusiasm... =P
Mel

The Jam, The Style Council, pretty much anything Paul Weller related!

Others include

The Small Faces
The Kinks
The Who
Johnny Cash
The Real People
Happy Mondays
Stone Roses

far too many more to mention but Weller is definately my top!!  Love the man!
Wynter

Hahaha, I like how these lists always reveal something you never knew about people - so Ella, you're an indie kind of girl? That's cool, although I'm sorry to say, I hate indie as a genre :-/

And Mel, you're into old-school rock? Nice!

NFA, your list sounds sort of country, western-ish to me, but I couldn't say for sure, because I don't really know the people on it!

Mys, Fallen Leaves is one of my favourite songs from that Billy Talent album! They performed it when I went to see them live last year, it was awesome.
ildjarn

Alphabetical order:
Autechre
Bach, Johann Sebastian
Björk
Carcass
Haus Arafna
Hocico
Ildjarn
Marillion
My dying bride
Napalm Death (first albums)
Rachmaninov, Sergei
Rush
Sopor aeternus & the ensemble of shadows
Untoten

And lots lots lots lots more. Progrock, powernoise, blackmetal, classical music, it's all there....
NotFadeAway

You're certainly right Wynter.  I like the country and Southern rock type music very much.   It's pretty much the music I grew up listening to and I've always loved it.
greengirl00

Yeah, I pretty much love indie =D But I like bits of folk and punk too, so you can pretty much play me anything and I'll be pretty happy...

Also, most of the ones on your list I love too, but as previously mentioned, I ran out of listy enthusiasm =P  Seth Lakeman's coming to my local music festival this summer (Brampton Live). It makes me happy c:
cardboardy

me, now, in no particular order

tori amos
NIN
beirut
mo horizons
shins
gotye
kate bush
phoenix
radiohead
dead can dance, lisa gerrard
pink floyd
bach
antony, joan, etc
betty davis, parliament, bootsy etc
blues and roots like muddy waters, etta james, black keys, rl burnside
lots of stuff from latin america, east africa, eastern europe

music is so important in my world, i have pretty broad tastes but i get very impatient with a lot of commercial stuff (except for hot rnb tunes that make you shake your booty uncontrollably, you know the ones!)
beagle

Gosh, we are eclectic as a group as I am as an individual:  by genre

Hot Rize
Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys

MXPX
NOFX

Strife
Earth Crisis

Black Sabbath
Van Halen (David Lee Roth days)

Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn

Hannah Montana  haha..  no really, poppy is pretty

Aaw, awesome! You'll love it, seriously, he's SO good live. When I saw him last year, he played Kitty Jay so fast that he broke the strings on his violin! It was immense times, overall.

Beags, eclectic is the best way to be. I used to say the music I was into solely consisted of metal/rock/punk, but as I've gotten older, it's varied a lot. Which is nice!
Ant4buffy

This is totally random but has anyone heard the new Alphabeat single 10,000 Nights?
beagle

Yes, we, at least the coherent ones, change as we grow/learn.
When I was in high school and college I was a Heavy Metal Science Geek. haha  The science club looked like a Heavy Metal concert tee fashion exhibit.  OMG  I was such a geek,, oh wait, I still am
beagle

What about music you just don't get? I'm not slamming on anything, we're all different and I see music I don't "like" as my own loss.

For me that would be modern R & B like Shakira or Maria Cary. My mind just won't process that stuff.
New Age, don't like that much either.
Dance, electronica, not enough notes. Some of it has a catchy melody but 6 notes 223 times in a row?
Usually anything that features the singing over the intruments isn't my fave either (celine dion stuff)

No, though I didn't like Fascination so I'm not inclined to check it out, sorry to say.

beagle wrote:

You should be proud. I've long come to terms with the fact that I'm a total geek, but I love it! So long as you're happy, then what's the harm?

beagle wrote:

Pop music, I hate it to bits. So much stuff in the charts today is all the same recycled crap about love, girls, sex, bla bla bla and sounds awful that I just can't stand it.

And I generally hate indie, I just think all of it sounds the same. If it's indie mixed with another genre, then I might like it, but straight indie, no.

I also agree with what you said about dance music - I like some of it, but only if it's got a catchy beat. Techno makes my head hurt.

Some R'n'B is annoying too, but then again, I actually like some of it.
MysteryEND

I do not get rap... IMO its just some guy talking....but then again you could say that a lot of my music is just some guy screaming.
Wynter

It's not quite just "talking", and the way that some raps and verses are put together are quite complex and clever. It takes a lot more skill than people give it credit for, to be honest.
beagle

My main issue with rap is the subject matter.
Materialism, Violence, Misogynism,Materialism, Violence, Misogynism,Materialism, Violence, Misogynism,Materialism, Violence, Misogynism,Materialism, Violence,

At the risk of sounding like an old fart I find that art form, in a large part, pervasive and a reflection of the root of the tragic social problems of a large part of its fan base. At least in America
You can only tell a financially disadvantaged young man or child that; material gains are the path to happiness and that it's ok to gain these things through the force of violence. That you are more of a man if you produce a brood of illegitimate children. That women are objects. That the rest of the world is out to get you.  Until it sinks in.
Wynter

Not all rap covers the same subject matter, though. I'll admit, the tools who are mainstream and mainly in the spotlight, like 50 Cent et al, basically rap about the same kind of stuff, like guns, drugs, bitches and hos, etc, but there's masses of it that's actually a bit more varied and intellectual. You'd be surprised.
ildjarn

I like Ice-T, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan (+ side projects, like RZA and Killa Beez) and (I know, I should be ashamed) NWA.

My sister's BF and his brothers listen to a lot of non-mainstream rap. I don't love it, but I can listen to it for an evening.
BepperGirl

I think I like all types of music. There's usually at least one song in every genre that I just inexplicably love. I think if there's a common element, it's the lyrics. I really dig witty lyrics and I realise that witty is bit of a subjective term, but there it is. Alix Olson is a master of the spoken word. I'm also a big fan of Jill Sobule. I can get into some Shakira, but it's mostly if it's in her native tongue. I also agree with Wynter that rap can be pretty intellectual sometimes. Some hip hop is pretty awesome too. There's a community theatre near my school that I volunteer at once in a while and they have hip hop nights some of the nights. The kids are geniuses.
dramagirl

Oooh... funsies.

Bellowhead
Seth Lakeman
Blondie
Coldplay
The Enemy
The Wombats
Feeder
James Blunt
Joni Mitchell
KT Tunstall
Regina Spektor
Snow Patrol
The Fratellis
The Killers
The Lostprophets

That was kinda a long list... anyhoo, stuff I don't like is anything boybandish, most hip hop and r 'n' b... I like most stuff, though, if you make me listen to it enough times. Smile
Wynter

Yay for bringing this topic back! I've been getting really into Pendulum lately, I don't know why because drum'n'bass really isn't my thing, but I really like them. Their latest album is a bit more electronica aswell, so I guess that makes the difference.
ildjarn

Some of the stuff I've been listening to a lot lately:

Ianva - In battaglia!
Sopor aeternus & the ensemble of shadows - In der Palästra
Winterkälte - Erosion
AIT! - Il mondo è morto (trent'anni fà)
Haus Arafna - Last dream of Jesus
Sturmast - For everyone circus and bread!
greengirl00

I've been listening to Seth LAkeman pretty exclusively this summer. I've liked him for a while, but I saw him live at the beginning of the summer, which really reminded JUST how great he is. So yeah, I've been listening to nothing but, which has been fun.
dramagirl

To add to that (^) we're also going to see him again in November. Hmmm... we may be slightly obsessed. Very Happy

He is pretty awesome.
TwoToGo-Grave

That's great.  You two have a lot of fun when you go back to see him.
dramagirl

Thanks Smile
Wynter

I'm glad you guys enjoyed his gig so much. He's great live, isn't he? Did he play Kitty Jay?

Thanks for those links ild, I'll have to listen at some point.
greengirl00

He did play Kitty Jay =D And pretty much killed his fiddle. Hehehe
HE IS AMAZING. =D
ildjarn

If you like violins: Check out Sieben:

I saw a few songs of this show, and it was pretty impressing to see what this guy was doing.
greengirl00

He's pretty cool. Does he play on his own, or was there a band that I couldn't see?

For anyon who's interested, Kitty Jay

Also, check out Crimson Dawn, White Hare, and Haunt You.

It's just him, a violin, and a backing tape.
greengirl00

It's a good sound from just the one guy.

but, it's not one guy,, it's a guy and a computer.  Surprised)
I'm sure he's awesome but I got a thing about people playing along with prerecorded music. Call me a purest or maybe just a snob.
My favorite fiddle player is Kenny Baker, his tone is awesome. But it's hard to beat Eddie Stubbs for technique.

Hahaha, awesome! He did the same when I saw him here, it was amazing. The speed he plays at is crazy!

I know, he's insanely talented. And pretty. lol =P
dramagirl

Not sure if anyone's interested, but here's a section of Kitty Jay live where we actually saw him.  It's our local festival.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP4v2-jLTyE

He was great. Very Happy
insaneinthebasement

Wow. I've never heard of him before now, but he's really good.

*nods enthusiastically* He is, isn't he?

Haha, spreading the love for Seth Lakeman, huh? Nice work, Ella Razz

Hehe, I've made it my life's work.
beagle

Hey, coming from an acoustic / bluegrass fan,  that Seth Lakeman stuff ain't bad at all. I think my little band sounds more like his stuff than bluegrass actually. Problem is, we're trying to play bluegrass... hahaha
No, really, I enjoyed it. It's really not that big of a step from his stuff to bluegrass. You just have to learn to tolerate the nasal hillbilly singing in bluegrass is all.
ildjarn

My latest obsession (and I bet you never suspected this from me):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYcLXZZ9ts

The beginning, with the trumpet, reminds me a lot of things like Ennio Morricone (or one of my other recent discoveries: IANVA).
Dosta

Led Zeppelin
Van Halen(DLR years)
Hank William jr
Colt Ford
Dr. Dre
Oasis
Guns & Roses
ac/dc
Tim Mcgraw
and much more....

Amy MacDonald? I have to say, you're right. I would never have thought that. You just keep us guessing =D

once upon a time i probably wouldn't have liked seth lakeman much, but then i lived with a banjo player who played bluegrass music 24/7 for a year, it was either learn to like it or suffer... so i learned to like it, you guys are kinda infective, and also folk festivals are fun Smile
beagle

haha, you poor thing... but yes, festivals are the heart of the genre, much nicer people than rock festivals. Plus all the fans playing music at their camp fires.  Sometimes we pick at our campsite, sometimes we just walk around all night setting in with different groups. good times
I think it's like punk rock arranged by a conductor and performed by hillbillies. Just substitute misery for angst and you're there.
I know it's made fun of but if you really try, it's actually much more complex than most any popular music. I mean you have 4-6 musicians just going after it like a thousand miles an hour, no electronics aids, just strings and voices. Plus about 100 more notes per minute as bonus.
I am beagle, and I am an addict.
greengirl00

I'm going to see Seth Lakeman again tomorrow night!! Happy happy happy.
insaneinthebasement

I can't stop listening to Nick Drake lately. He's been constantly on repeat for like a week now, and every time I try to listen to something else I can't help thinking I'd prefer to be listening to Nick Drake again.
greengirl00

I really love it when something like that happens. It doesn't always last, but I think it's really fun to get into a new artist.

I just went and listened to some of his stuff on youtube, and I can see why you're addicted, he's really talented.
insaneinthebasement

its weird though, cos it's not a new thing, i've loved nick drake for years. but i hadn't listened to him for a few months so i put him on last week, and it was like i heard something new in it. and now i can't stop.
if i could go back in time to see any band or singer live, i would see nick drake. he's genius.
Wynter

I've really gotten into old school classic rock'n'roll again, and I want to listen to more. AC/DC's Back in Black album is the main thing on repeat for me right now.
