New Buffy Movie

So what do you guys think about this new movie idea? Apparently with the success of Twilight and such, they are making a new "Buffy" movie - but without Buffy, or anyone else for that matter.

It isn't a sequel, or a prequel, and it doesn't have anything to do with the Buffyverse as we know it. It is set in Sunnydale but is a "relaunch" of the Buffyverse with new people.

Also, as of now, Joss Whedon is NOT involved.

Your thoughts?

Welcome to the forum.

As for the movie, I doubt it will ever be made.  I read about it online earlier tonight, and it sounded like one of the dumbest ideas imaginable.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joss Whedon, or any of the ACTUAL CHARACTERS is a joke.
ildjarn

Buffy movie? No. Movie based on Buffy? Perhaps.

A Fray movie might be interesting. Or a Vi movie (but mainly because I like Felicia Day Wink)
Mel

Sounds like the worse idea in movie history.

How can the have a Buffy movie without any of the characters and without Joss!!

What I read is that it's gonna be a remake of the original 1992 movie.

If Joss isn't involved, I'm pretty much not interested.  Unless it was something like some of the major writer/producers wanted to do something and Joss gave them the ok.
While I would love to see the actors/characters from the TV series that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.
Actually, I would go see it regardless (unless of course Joss told me not to.. haha) I just wouldn't expect too much of it. But if "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is on the bill, I'll be there.
greengirl00

I doubt it'll happen, unfortunately. well fortunately, I guess, if none of the characters would be in it
Abby

What I read was an article on E! which I would guess is somewhat reliable. Apparently Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband Kaz Kuzui have had the rights to Buffy since when the movie was made and they are behind the talk of the new movie.

I really think what made this show so good was in large due to Joss Whedon and his amazing writing and direction of the show. I would just hate to have something as well done and amazing as Buffy brought into this next decade just to appeal to 12 year olds who had never heard of the show prior.

I work at a movie theater and I swear, if Joss says the movie is gonna suck then I'll refuse to sell tickets! =P

"[Any Buffy movie] should be made with Joss Whedon... it would be madness to do it without him... It may be a bit like watching a car wreck.” - Anthony Stewart Head

Pretty much sums it up.

*headdesk*
while we're at it lets cast this train wreck.

Tom Cruise as Xander
Miley Cyrus as Anya
Jsssica Simpson as Willow
Jennifer Aniston as Buffy
Hugh Grant as Spike and Angel (what an actor!)
Margaret Thatcher as Giles

hmmm, maybe it wont be so bad...

(yeah i know those charaters wont be in it, but i haven't seen the original movie so i dont really know how else to quip)
Mullsen

Is it scary that I'd actually want to watch this movie with those "actors" in it. It would be hilarious comedy at least (unintentionally of course).
insaneinthebasement

How about Jim Carrey as Andrew then, and one of the Olsen twins as Dawn. No, BOTH of the Olsen twins as Dawn, just switching and everyone pretends not to notice like when they were babies.
beagle

And then we could do like the Wiz and have an all African cast! Morgan Freedman could play Giles. etc...  haha

Mr. T to play Giles, how 'bout? Very Happy  In fact, unless Mr. T is playing Giles, who''d want to see it? Razz
Ebdim9th

Since theyre going to be rewriting it from scratch, from what I interpretted in the Hollywood Reporter article, all bets are off. We won't know what they're gonna go and do with it until they've started in on it. If Joss Whedon is not in charge, lock, stock and barrel, I wont even glance at it. I could see just from all the second-hand sources that Twilight is a really crappy Buffy rip-off and I will never have anything to do with it. At least I could  rationalize that Moonlight was a rip-off of Forever Knight instead of Angel....
insaneinthebasement

I always thought Twilight was more of a ripoff of the Southern Vampire novels (which True Blood is based on). In summary they're both pretty much "Hmm, I really like the werewolf as well, but the vampire and I are perfect for each other because we can't read each other's minds."
Maybe vampires are so in vogue in pop culture that they're all kind of ripoffs of each other. And from what I've heard about this remake, if it happens, is it's the Kazuis hoping to cash in on the fad. They've already ruined Joss' idea once, it's pretty awful of them to do it again.
Ebdim9th

And of course Becoming Pt. 1 already has a partial redux of the original Kazui movie as reimagined by Joss himself, the complete version itself redone in the comic book and novelization.

Twilight has too many similarities to Buffy, especially the high school girl with her teen wolf boyfriend. At least BtVS openly acknowledged its debt to 'the eighties training montages' and other trappings of such prior teen movie fare.... I will give Twilight some points for its Mormon Vampire take on things....

If I've learned one thing in my artistic experiences it is that there is nothing new under the sun.
But, that being said I would like to announce that I have officially changed my position on the new Buffy movie and I will NOT attend a Buffyverse movie that does not involve Joss Whedon.

In Joss we trust...  teehee
Ebdim9th

I think mutations bring about sufficient change to differentiate one thing/ artistic project from another. The building blocks of DNA are always the same, but the mutated variations are endless.

Nowhere has there ever been a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer before Joss.

There was never a song called I Kissed A Girl sung by a girl before Jill Sobule...

Great and small there are always new variations, even if there are no new basic DNA building blocks under the sun....

But agree totally with your concept.  That the lines between rip-off, homage and creative license are fuzzy.
Artists take other peoples foundations and put our own spin on it "make it our own"
Half the pop stars out there probably couldn't write DNA, much less a good song... But for some reason society would rather see a pretty face and cookie cutter voice lip sinc a song rather than hear the original artist's/writer's interpretation.
Ebdim9th

Lets just say Ive never heard any song in the popular media, underground or otherwise, and I've listened to alot, that had a girl singing I kissed a girl before Jill Sobule in 1994. And I dont doubt for a second that this new "I Kissed A Girl" song borrows heavily from it, maybe primarily just ripping off the idea of the title, maybe more, but I seriously doubt, myself, that it's just a coincidence...

And god help us anyone to a man who might sing who can't rip off thier shirt and reveal washboard abs....

It has to be worse when it comes to women.  What society wants in their music (and TV and movies) is just ridiculous and nonsensical, it seems.
Ebdim9th

It's the men with the washboard abs who are often predatory in the music business and require the female singers on thier labels or tours to be supa sluts.... for thier pleasure and the high drool-count of the audience.. as well as 'inspiring' the girls in the audience to put out like that backstage, too. Charlotte Church had her moment in that bumping and grinding first pop video she did, but at least she cooled back down for her other videos and appearances and then flatly turned down Maxim's offer to pose for them in their, 'but she has a thong or a wrap on its not porn!', celebrity skin pics. But then, a lot of others have, Sarah Michelle Gellar included, but at least Char said no. But then, hey, self-sabotage much? I have that SMG issue of Maxim and used to have on computer file the one for FHM that Alyson Hannigan did... so if were to try to become a professional male singer/artist, I've only shot myself in the foot, even if I dont control the scene.
beagle

Yes, I actually heard some talking head say that one of the idol girls (I don't watch the show so I have no idea who they were talking about ) should lose the guitar!!??!  What? That burns me! Like seeing the girls body is more important than playing the guitar!?!? Makes me want to barf.
In my genre of music, if you don't "pick" (play an instrument) you pretty much don't "perform" sing. You just don't see people on stage without an instrument.  So maybe you can have some insight into my feelings.  Someone just standing up there and singing is, well, to me, just lame.
I guess it's about the music though. I generally don't care much for music that is dominantly vocal in nature.
Ebdim9th

A couple of folks on Whedonesque were calling those of us who declaim this money-stunt by the Kaz and Fran Rubel Kazui as a bad idea irrational because we havent seen a script, director, cast etc even though they themselves admit that not having Joss on board will most likely ruin it. *double-take* huh? We're saying the same thing, without waiting to give them a chance to derail the new movie just like they did the first one. How is that irrational?
marvin21st

Ok I admit it if it comes about I will go to see it and probably enjoy it. If it is any good on its own! For example Bones, I like the books and the show but they are nothing alike ecept for the basics.
I must admit I like basic teen romance it maybe just a bit of fluff that doesnt make me go into a indepth analysis of the characters or has me thinking past walking out of the theater but I like that warm fuzzy feeling they give me.
But on the other hand a Joss movie would be fantastic and I would go and see it a hundred times and wouldnt be able to stop talking about it and my friends and family would likely murder me just to shut me up.

So you see either way I fine with it.
ildjarn

You're fine with your family murdering you?

What do you people think of fan movies? I only have one at the moment (Fluffy the English vampire slayer), but can't the same reasoning (it's not Joss' work) be applied to those? Or is the budget also a major factor (fanbased movies are usually on a very small budget, the new movie is probably big bucks).
Ebdim9th

Depends on whether, like with the Buffy and Angel novelisations, and even pre-existing fanfic by people like Marti Noxon who was on the Bronze as a fan before she got brought onto the show in season 2, Joss approves them legally or not. He authorises season 8 as well. The Kazuis do not, and have not, done that. If they could have made money by doing so, they would have already. They, apparently, are exercising the only legal powers over ther franchise that they have, the original movie.

And since Joss wrote the original script/story, he no doubt at least has some say over that as well. We'll see what he does or doesn't do if they keep pressing on with it.
beagle

Good point Ild.  I enjly the fan stuff.
I guess, for me it's the feeling that the new movie with the exclusion of Joss is all an effort to "grub" money.
Ebdim9th

And above all, its wiping out his creative property down to a skeleton and making money off of his 'name product' - cutting him, and the fans who write the fanfic, completely out of the picture for some mythological new demographic.

Nevermind that he's already in the middle of writing its 8th season, and the spin-off Angel, 's sixth.... He's right in the midst of an ongoing work and here they are running along behind him with a big eraser, changing history and blotting what he's just done out.
