Has anyone seen Juno?  I saw it this weekend and it's the best I've seen in a long while. The Juno character is the bomb.
Wynter

I saw it! I thought it was really quite funny and heart-warming, Ellen Page was awesome in the lead role. Michael Cera was good too, although he didn't have as big a role as I'd expected, which was a bit disappointing. Still definitely worth the watch, though!
beagle

Hey you guys across the sea. Have any of you seen the series Hex?  Is it any good.
marvin21st

I have but I wouldnt buy it. Suggest watching a bit first if you can. The first few eps. were fairly good but it didnt seem to go anywhere. I will probably give it another go in the future but it will be a while.
Wynter

I haven't seen Hex - what's it about? Worth watching? Should I add it to my colossal list of TV I have to watch this summer?
beagle

I'm getting Hex on Netflix. It says it's about a teenage misfit who finds out she has magic powers and her friend. Well, that's how I remember it. It's from England. Don't think there are many episodes though.
Wynter

Ooh, sounds kinda intriguing. I may watch it eventually!
MysteryEND

HEX!
I love hex its an awesome series BUT it has a really bad ending... or lack of one.
I suggested watching it months ago

Ooo, Ooo I wish I'd been paying better attention. I'm going to move it up my queue!

Just finished Bones season 2. What an utterly brilliant wedding! And what a great show!

You know, I haven't watched this but for like the first two episodes. So it's more than just another CSI?  not that CSI is bad

I'm usually not a big fan of crime shows, but this one I like. It has a lot of humour, which I love.
Wynter

I just finished watching all of Pushing Daisies, which was quite fun. That's one thing that can be crossed off my list!
beagle

Just finished the Showtime original series "Dexter" about a serial killer with a "conscience" (if you will)
Interesting but brutal.
Wynter

I've heard of Dexter, and it's definitely one I want to watch. I'll add it to my list.
Ant4buffy

Saw Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull today. Its quite good. Better than the rest I think and there isn't too much of the "I'm too old for this" jokes.
Wynter

I saw that on opening day Very Happy I thought it was awesome, and it still has the excitement, humour and magic of the previous Indy films, but they missed the boat with the twist. What the hell ever, that was ridiculous.
beagle

Am Loving HEX. Am up to like episode 8ish.  It looks like there was a 2nd season also but the DVD release date hasn't been set.
Wynter

I've been watching Supernatural, and I absolutely flippin' LOVE it. I've been a fan of Jensen Ackles since Dark Angel, so it was inevitable I'd love this show, but it's ridiculous just how much I do already. I'd definitely recommend it, it's entertaining, creepy, funny (god, absolutely hilarious at times), witty, heartfelt, angsty and just brilliant. Seriously, watch!!!
Beckyxx

I couldnt really get into Supernatural or Bones. They are probably good I just have a bad attention span!

I adored Tru Calling but when I finished the boxset I needed something to fill the void. I tried everything....
Pushing Daisies is really good, Dead Like Me was odd but in a good way.
I've got a new huge obsession with How I Met Your Mother - just waiting for season 3 to be released.
And Freaks and Geeks, good god I love that show!

Spending quite a lot of time watching Jamie Oliver cooking shows and Long Way Down/ Round. Ewan rules!

Supernatural really is awsome, plus it has a couple of Buffy-actors in it :3 I didn't like Bones at first but now I really love it ^^ As for Freaks and Geeks, that is one show every person must see!
Wynter

Becky, SHAME on you! :-O Seriously, I demand you sit down and force yourself through it. It won't take long to hook you XD And on a more shallow note, seriously, it has two of the hottest guys on the planet as its stars, and you got BORED?!

BoreanazFan wrote:

I noticed! Amy Acker and Julie Benz, I marked out when I saw them, good times. I keep seeing lots of stars in it that I recognise though, it's fairly cool.

Freaks and Geeks is something I've gotta add to my list!

I've been watching Black Books lately, which is just hysterical. Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran FTW!

I watched an entire episode of The Mighty Boosh on Youtube, instead of being all chopped up, but with the missing scenes reinserted... "The Legend of Old Gregg"

One of the funniest, weirdest things I've ever seen...

Don't know where it would be online (apart from YouTube), but you should track it down, it's probably the funniest show I've ever seen.

Mys~~ it actually reminds me a little of an American cable comedy, called Mr. Show...

You can watch it all (bar 2 episodes of season 3, for some dumb reason), here.  That site is AWESOME for tv-watching.

The Mighty Boosh is so bizarre! Very much a cult hit, the fans LOVE it while others just hate it. I haven't seen enough to really form an opinion yet. But Noel Fleming is very funny.
Ebdim9th

Friend of mine from over in UK said he creeps her out though, but she likes everyone else on the show...

Black Books is SO funny... Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey are geniuses, and Tamsin Greig too.. (random, but does anyone else think the plural of genius should be geni? Sounds so much funnier...)

I think you can watch the other two episodes on this site, www.watchblackbooksonline.com. If you follow the link to watch it through youku.com, then it definitely works (I couldn't get the other links to work) though it does have japanese subtitles *cough*
Ebdim9th

It has all three seasons linked...
greengirl00

yeah, I just meant that if you couldn't watch the two episodes on that site, then this one is an alternative. =)
Ebdim9th

Yeah, you can watch the whole thing through, all three, uninterrupted, with those two added back in...
Ant4buffy

Ok gonna mention it now. This is a movie thread guys. If you're gonna discuss programmes then go ahead and make a new thread for random tv stuff. I like the way it had one post about a movie before going to Hex. Hehe. But if we could talk about films on here that would be great. Thanks.

On that note - anyone seen The Incredible Hulk? Loved it. How about Wanted? I'm seeing that tonight.

Has anyone here seen Persepolis?  It's an animated movie adapted from Marjane Satrapi's amazing graphic novels that is actually made by Satrapi herself.  Persepolis is the (true) story of Satrapi's life from the late '70s to the early '90s:  the experience growing up in Iran during the Revolution, the repression of the Islamic Republic, her experience in Vienna, her return to Iran, etc.  If you haven't seen it, you really, really should.  The movie is absolutely amazing in every way.  I was already a huge fan of her books, so I figured that I'd really like the movie, but it was better than I could have expected.  It really is an incredible movie, so I very much suggest watching it.

Seconded.  It's just great.
Ebdim9th

I still wanna see The Happening, and Hancock too...
Ant4buffy

The Happening is very good. Didn't really like Night's other films as I knew the twist before I saw them. But this was a great film. Nicely acted apart from one line from Mark and pretty much everything that his female co-star said.
Ebdim9th

Was that the girl from Pushing Daisies, whose sister, it turns out, plays Bones?
Ant4buffy

Just looking it up on Wiki - She doesn't seem to be part of any programmes. her name is Zooey Deschanel.
Ebdim9th

Yeah thats her... she's on Pushing Daisies...
Ant4buffy

Ah right. Well she's bad in The Happening. Hope she's better in your programmes.
Ebdim9th

That's a shame, coz she's positively the beez kneez in Pushing Daisies...
BepperGirl

Anna Friel is Charlotte "Chuck" Charles on Pushing Daisies, not Zooey Deschanel.
Ebdim9th

You're right. Geez, where'd did I get the mix up from? I guess its been longer than I thought since I watched the show...

I just saw The Dark Knight today and...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just an amazing movie and (at least in my opinion) easily the best Batman movie made so far.  And Heath Ledger's work as the Joker is absolutely wonderful.  I could say more, but I certainly don't want to spoil anything.
Wynter

NFA, I completely agree. I saw the movie at a preview just today aswell, and these are my thoughts I just posted at another board:

"Why is everyone ragging on Bale's Batman's voice?! I LOVE it! To me, it's an important part of what makes him Batman - I mean like, the whole deep-voiced, intense, badass thing he has going on is what I personally imagine Batman to be like. Seriously, I love it.

I saw The Dark Knight today, and I'm still freaking out at the sheer awesomeness. Absolutely amazing. Again, I loved the morbid, darker tone that we first saw in Batman Begins (though it was amplified for this film), and even though it's all based on a comic-book and essentially the hero is a man who dresses up as a bat to fight crime, I loved the realistic element of a city corrupt and in chaos, and the whole representation of order vs. anarchy. Heath, it goes without saying, was frucking PHENOMENAL as the Joker. He legitimately scared the crap out of me, and I can agree with Sir Michael Caine when he says that his performance surpasses Nicholson's in the original. He was psychotic, unnerving, morbidly amusing, and just plain awesome.

And of course, Christian Bale was amazing!!! Did I mention how much I love his representation of Batman? Easily my favourite by far (sorry, George Clooney). I loved how despite the fact Bruce Wayne tried to seperate himself from his alter-ego, he accepted at the end that he can't let that side go, because the city needs him. But he's not a hero in the typical sense. Gah, brilliant!!! I also loved the juxtaposition of his "dark knight" to Eckhart's "white knight". Eckhart who was also amazing. I was actually a bit worried that the whole thing with Two Face and having two villains would overshadow the Joker, but it didn't, so that was a relief.

And some of the dialogue in the movie was just brilliant. Gah, it was all great!!! I need to go see it again."

Seriously, words cannot describe the epicness. Everyone needs to go see for themselves.
beagle

James Marsters is guest staring on "Without a Trace" tonight.  10EST
ildjarn

I haven't seen TDK yet, but heard it was based on 'The killing joke'. That one, together with Arkham Asylum, is my favourite Batman comic, so that's a good reference.

I hate cinemas so I'm gonna wait for the DVD release.
Ant4buffy

I saw Wall-E on Sunday. Twas good. Great pixar funnyness and the main message was nicely told.

Ild - I'm intrigued. Why do you not like cinemas? Is it the sticky floors or the amazingly overpriced popcorn?
ildjarn

Ant4buffy wrote:

There are other people there who ruin my watching pleasure by making noise. Plus I don't like the chairs most of the time. I've only been in one cinema where I liked the chairs, and that one had another disadvantage: people were allowed to smoke in there.
beagle

I don't like Cinemas either.
Yes, mainly the people, and kids too, arrrghh.
But also, too loud, good gracious, I mean I like loud music but movies? A book is silent and just as interesting. I just don't really get in to all the surround sound, and high def. and big screens. To me, it's all about the story. If the story is good, 5 minutes into the movie I am so in to it that I could be watching on a 13" black and white and I wouldn't notice the difference.
And too much money, you gotta be kidding?
Oh, on a side note. I once did some work at a site that they were building a cinema and they actually had a fan and duct work that sucked up the popcorn smell and blew it outside where you stand in line to buy your tickets.
beagle

Oh, and most of todays movies I just can't watch.
Nearly any movie that is concieved as a series of special effects and stunts, then, is sent to someone to write a story that will put these people into these situations, well...  When I learned that that is how most action movies where written I was like, makes sense.

Anyone else a Studio Ghibli fan? I got Earthsea in the mail today, so my Ghibli collection is complete once again (all 15 Ghibli full length movies, plus Cagliostro and little Norse Prince). My personal favourites are Kiki and Grave of fireflies.
insaneinthebasement

I'm a Ghibli fan, I love Miyazaki. Kiki is my favourite too. Grave of the Fireflies was good, but a bit too depressing to be a favourite. I love Spirited Away and Porco Rosso too.
Do you watch them in Japanese? I don't know if there's dubbed versions in Dutch, but Disney released some of Miyazaki's films in English and they were so bad. I started watching the dubbed version of Kiki's on TV once, and it was so painful I had to turn it off (it was Billy Crystal as Gigi).
ildjarn

I love Grave of fireflies because it's so depressing. Amazing how powerful an animated movie, despised by many as 'a children's thing', can be. And I completely forgot to mention 'Only yesterday', that's such a charming movie.

I used to love Spirited away (it was my first exposure to Ghibli movies). But compared to several other of their movies, it's not that good, I feel.

I watch them in Japanese with English subs. I'm used to subs (movies in NL are usually broadcasted in the original spoken language with subs, the major exception being children's movies). I usually dislike dubbing.

Another Japanese anime series that I loved: Haibane renmei.
greengirl00

Me and my sister both love Studio Ghibli, but we tend to watch them in English. Am I the only one who does this?? I don't mind dubbing on studio ghibli, but it really annoys me on anime shows like fruits basket.

My favourite is probably Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.
insaneinthebasement

I saw them in Japanese first (Spirited Away was my first Miyazaki exposure too) and I found that when they were dubbed it was like the American actors really changed the characters, so it felt wrong to me. Also it was like they really felt the need to explain things a lot more in the English version, so that whenever a character had their back turned they'd cram in extra lines of exposition, and it really spoilt the serene atmosphere of the films.
Have you watched them in Japanese before Greengirl? Because if not you probably wouldn't miss anything, and they're still great films either way.

Here's an experiment for you: next time you watch one (especially Kiki's, it's where I noticed it the most), watch it in English with subtitles as well. The subtitles should be the translation of the Japanese and the English is the reworked Disney script, they're really quite different.

I haven't seen Only Yesterday, Ildjarn, who does that? I haven't seen Haibane Renmei either, but it looks really good.
ildjarn

insaneinthebasement wrote:

Isao Takahata, the guy who directed Grave.

insaneinthebasement wrote:

It is . It's about a group of angels (Haibane renmei means 'the gray wings group'), and it's very sweet and charming.

About dubbing: These movies were made to be heard in Japanese. All the facial expressions are based on people talking Japanese. I really hate the discrepancy between what I see and what I hear in dubbed movies.

And more anime tips:
- Akira
- Steamboy
- Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust (the second VHD movie, I didn't like the first one very much)
- Ghost in the shell 1 and 2
- Metropolis (not to be confused with the brilliant Fritz Lang movie, although the two have some similarities)
insaneinthebasement

I thought Steamboy looked really really good, and I bought it on dvd, and I tried to watch it so many times and just could not get through it without getting distracted or falling asleep. I was so disappointed. The animation was amazing, but I just couldn't get into the story.
And now I don't seem to have the dvd anymore, I must have 'lent' it to a friend.
ildjarn

Really? I spent 2 hours staring mesmerised to the screen. I absolutely love Steamboy.
insaneinthebasement

I really wish I had been able to get into it, because I was so looking forward to seeing it after I first heard about it.

The US distribution is done by Disney, I think. I've read a story about Only yesterday and Disney's refusal to distribute it because it mentions menstruation, which is against company policy. Grave of the fireflies is also not distributed in the USA.

I don't know if they are actual Disney scripts. I do know that Neil Gaiman wrote one of the English scripts (Princess Mononoke).

greengirl00 wrote:

Miyazaki was one of the artists for Little Norse prince, but it's pre-Ghibli. You have to take into account the year it was made (1967). There are some weird scenes in it (the wolves attacking the village for instance) where they used still images for some reason.
insaneinthebasement

Greengirl it's probably just the distributer that's the Optimum Asia one, in Australia they're released by a company called Madman but their still Ghibli/Disney movies.
I just did some Wikipeding and according to that, they are Disney scripts, but they're approved by Ghibli.
Also turns out I was completely making that up about Billy Crystal playing the cat too, because he's wasn't in Kiki's Delivery Service at all (maybe only half making it up, I must have been confusing it with Howl's Moving Castle, which he really is in).
I'd read about Only Yesterday not being released in the US, strange policy that one. I didn't know about Grave of the Fireflies, but I am really not surprised.
ildjarn

insaneinthebasement wrote:

Apparently, it goes against the 'family' image of Disney. All the Ghibli DVDs I have are by Optimum Asia by the way.
insaneinthebasement

thousands of people dying because an american bomb not happy family viewing? really?

(that was sarcasm by the way)
Wynter

Saw Get Smart yesterday, which was genuinely hilarious. The script is a great mixture of slapstick and deadpan humour, the latter of which mostly works because of Steve Carrell's brilliant delivery. I love him. And in general, it was just a funny film. Go see!
NotFadeAway

I saw two movies today, and wanted to write a bit about them.
First off, I went with my brother and four of our friends to the movie theater to see Star Wars:  The Clone Wars.  I won't spoil anything about the movie (in case anyone wants to see it), but it was just horrible.  The writing was atrocious and almost embarrassing to even listen to, the story was absolutely stupid and illogical, and the characterization was totally wrong (the characters in this movie were way off the way they acted in the Episode I-III.)  Overall, I'd say that you should only watch this movie if you're drunk and want something to laugh at.

The second movie I saw today was To Kill a Mockingbird, the classic film for 1961.  It was the first time I've seen it (me and my brother met our mom for dinner after we left the theater and she recommended it to us), and I was blown away.  This is a very simple movie, but it's got amazing characters, writing, story, and performances, and message.  It's a slow developing film, but it kept me enthralled the entire time.  I'd suggest everyone watch this movie.  It's just amazing.
dramagirl

I'm a Ghibli addict and am trying to complete my collection.  I have about... hmm... ten? Including Little Norse Prince and Castle of Cagliostro, which I really loved, aven though it was pre-Ghibli.  I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.

Favourites are Laputa, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away... I could go on.

Has anyone heard anything about the new Hayao Miyazaki film?  I just know it has a li'l creature called Ponyo.
ildjarn

dramagirl wrote:

It's gonna be released on DVD in 2009 I think? I'm anxiously awaiting that one. Although Earthsea was a bit of a disappointment, I'm afraid, but that mayhave been because I absolutely love the books. For the movie story, they mixed The farthest shore (my favourite Earthsea book) and Tehanu (my least favourite), and there was too much Tehanu in it....
dramagirl

Yeah, it looks good. I haven't seen any of Earthsea, but I haven't read the books so maybe I'd be less put off by that. I've heard a few people say it wasn't as good as a lot of the others.
Wynter

I watched Eden Lake last week, which is a British thriller, but genuinely more scary than most horrors I've seen, because of its realism and social parallels. It's about a young couple who go away for a romantic weekend, and run into some trouble with a gang of kids (complete and utter chavs). The situation quickly escalates and deteriorates in anger and vicious violence, and at the end, more than one person is dead. I don't want to say more without spoiling it but it's a damn good film, disturbing and chilling but thought-provoking.
marvin21st

I have a free movie ticket. Any suggestions? No horror please I cant stomach it anymore after Chainsaw.
Wynter

Marv, Burn After Reading is brilliant, go see that!
beagle

Only three more weeks until Twilight! I am so excited. I've managed to infiltrate my friends and many have read it and are going with me!
dramagirl

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to Twilight!  For us UK folk, the release is December.  Hope you have a great time.
greengirl00

Waah! Twilight! Yayness.
I read the first three last Christmas, and then the last one the day it came out hehe. Two of my friends have recently read them (one of whom NEVER reads). They're becoming a real phenomenon, or have become...

Me and my other friend, who read them at about the same time as me are getting possessive over Edward now, lol. We got there first... ggrrr...
insaneinthebasement

Oh I'm just halfway through reading them now, i read Twilight yesterday and I just finished New Moon a couple of minutes ago. Have to go do some housework before I start on the third one though- might not get much sleep tonight.
I'm loving the books, but remain cautious about the movie.
Wynter

Bah to the Twilight movie, I'm not really happy with the casting. But I'll probably see it anyway.
beagle

Wynter wrote:

Yes, movies just can't be books. I'm afraid that I am over optimistic and will be disappointed as well but I, on the other hand, like the casting. Bella looks just about as I pictured her, except my Bella was nerdier maybe more like the Jaye character on Wonderfalls"
greengirl00

Wynter wrote:

I'm not being too optimistic, often they kill books by making them into films, but I'm actually really happy about the casting.

Except Jasper.
His hair is too fluffy.
insaneinthebasement

So I'm on to the fourth Twilight book. I liked the third one more than the second one.

Casting for a book-turned-movie must be the hardest thing to do, it can never possibly fit the images that millions of people have in their heads.

Usually it doesn't bother me too much while I'm watching the movie, what really gets me is if I read the books again after seeing the movie, and then I can only see the actor in my head. I feel it takes away from the writing a bit because the character can't quite get the originality they had before I saw the movie, like they're a bit limited or something.

I dunno, maybe it's just my imagination that's limited.

I always end up seeing the movies anyway.

I agree, even after seeing the trailers and stuff before I read Breaking Dawn I saw the characters as the actors. Especially Bella, Edward, Rose, and Alice. I haven't seen that much of the others but I agree that Jasper is just too pretty and the big one, crap, I'm having a blind spot, anyway, he isn't big and rough enough. I just dismissed their images and inserted my own but with Bells and Edward I liked the casting so I inserted them.. haha

OK, I'm excited now. Opens tomorrow. Have a chance to maybe go to a pre-screening tonight.  The last movie I went to at the theater was Serenity so, it takes a lot to get me out.

Holy crap, seriously?! :-O Do you NEVER go to the movies? That dumbfounds me! Only because I'm a cinema junkie, haha.

But yeah re: Twilight casting. What is the big deal with Robert Pattinson? I'm sorry but I just don't see it at all, he's gross. And Kristin Stewart is pretty but she's nowhere near as stunning and "beautiful" as Bella is described in the books - she was built up to be pretty good looking, and in my eyes, KS falls short. Not saying that she's ugly 'cos she's not, but she doesn't match up. And don't get me started on RP again, urgh.

And what the hell is with Jacob, he looks about 12!

haha,,  yes, but I can get past all that.

yes, I never go to the movies.  The time line for me and movies, well, it's like they don't exist until they come out on dvd. and I'm getting that way with TV also.  I don't like the crowds for one, secondly the cost is outragous, I can buy the dvd for what one visit to the cinema costs. And they always play them way too loud.  OMG, I'm getting old. I just admitted that I am a fuddy duddy.  oh well..

Still I am excited about going tomorrow night with a group of friends so...

I know! Oh I'm so glad someone can see that! From what I've read, there seems to be all these fangirls going crazy about how gorgeous he is.  I was beginning to think I'd really missed something, I actually think he's quite ugly. And not that it should matter, but in the books he was meant to be like the most good looking guy ever.
I don't mind the Kristen Stewert casting though, she's not far off what I imagined. And I thought she was alright in Into The Wild.
I get what you mean with Jacob though, it was my first thought too. He does look young, and again, not at all what I'd imagined, but he is meant to be only 15 in Twilight, and the actor's 16, so I guess they're just hoping he'll grow up a fair bit before the next movie.

I used to go to the movies about every week before I had a baby, and now I hardly ever get the chance, which kind of sucks. I keep meaning to go check out a cry baby session so I can take Jet with me, but they always play romantic comedies that aren't worth paying thirteen bucks to see.
I don't know if any of my friends are Twilight fans, so I think I'll have to lend the book to someone so I have a friend to see the movie with. Oh that's a bit sad.

Saw "Sidney White" last night and thought it was cute. Plus, lots of BtVS references. and Danny Strong and I believe the girl that played Anne/Lilly/Chanterelle with a couple lines.

I liked the Twilight movie. Thought they did about all they could.  Anyone else see it?
