Still a couple days to go before I finish Angel, but I wanted to get this thread started now before I forget about it in the midst of travelling home on Thursday, etc.
Basically, both insaneinthebasement and I have never seen Firefly so we thought we'd discuss the show on the BATG board, isn't that dandy? So you can get our reactions and we can get each other's thoughts on the episodes, knowing that neither of us is really spoiled for what comes up.
Anyway, here's the schedule we're going to follow, times are American Eastern Time (add fourteen hours for Melbourne time and if you're in another time zone than either of us, hopefully you can do the math yourself):
July 5: 1x01 and 1x02 (so anytime between 2pm on July 5 and 1:59pm on July 6 for insane)
July 6: 1x03
July 7: 1x04
July 8: 1x05
July 9: 1x06
July 10: 1x07
July 11: 1x08
July 12: 1x09 and 1x10
July 13: 1x11
July 14: 1x12
July 15: 1x13
July 16: 1x14
July 17: Serenity
In case you're wondering, there's two on the 5th and 12th 'cause it's the weekend for both of us. Also because I want to be done in time to get in on the streaming of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and if we have a strict one-a-day, there might not be enough time. (We'd finish Serenity on the 19th, the final day that Dr. Horrible is up for free.) One-a-day on the other days because, well, there's only fourteen episodes and a movie. We don't want it over like that.
Anywho, some ground rules:
The first poster (meaning either insane or I, henceforth known as First Newbie as it can change on a daily basis who first reacts on this thread) to discuss the assigned episode(s) for the day not yet over should put her reactions to said episode(s) in the spoiler code. If you're not sure how to work this, the code is:
Code:
[spoiler]text[/spoiler]
where text is hidden like so:
Spoiler:
text
Posters who have seen Firefly/Serenity in its entirety should also spoiler their posts, keeping discussion only up to, at the latest, the episodes that have been seen by First Newbie.
Discussing plot points of episodes in the spoiler text can stop once the second newbie (again, insane or I, meaning not that day's First Newbie) has posted their thoughts on the given episode(s) OR it's otherwise clear that both insane and I have seen the episode(s) -- so after it's midnight in American Eastern Time or after 2pm in Melbourne time.
When discussing in spoiler text, somewhere outside of the cut, posters should clarify what is the most recent episode that is being discussed underneath the spoiler text. Just to be safe ;)
All posters with spoilered posts can edit their previous posts to unspoiler things that have been declared "OK" for the newbies read if they wish to do so.I think that's everything. I'm really excited about this. (And why, yes, I'm ridiculously anal-retentive about some things :P)

I started a rewatch yesterday, saw Serenity (part 1 and 2). _________________ Listening to you I get the music

So it was slow going at first, I was a bit bored so I had to pause the episode a couple times to take a break and then come back to it. But by the end, I could see the potential. I like Kaylee, she's such a Ms. Fix It. Kaylee/Inara femslash potential is good. Haven't seen too much of Summer Glau's character, but hopefully she'll be every bit awesome I've heard. She and her brother are a bit incesty. There were some interesting cuts though I'd be hard pressed to remember where they were at the moment. I had seen more in icons than I had realised, heh.

The slowness of Serenity (the pilot) was the reason Fox broadcasted The train job first. Joss Whedon and Tim Minear said something like 'they wanted to start in the middle of the adventure, in the action bit, without the necessary introductions'.
I watched the last four episodes, bonus materials (don't miss the hidden Adam Baldwin extra!) and Serenity today.
Downside: This show lasted only 14 episodes, while utter crap gets multiple seasons. Bastards!
Upside: If this wasn't cancelled, would we have had Serenity (the movie)?
River gets her moments. Trust me. _________________ Listening to you I get the music

Ok, so I've finally started watching, behind schedule already, oh dear. I've been away from my dvd collection the last few days, but I'm sure it won't take me long to catch up and I'm sure my soon-to-be-due uni assignment will suffer for it. But oh well.
So far I've watched Serenity parts 1 & 2, and The Train Job.
Agreed that Serenity was a bit slow at first, but I stuck with it because it always takes me at least one episode to warm up to the characters in any show, so to be honest, until I saw the above posts I thought it was just cynical old me.
Having said that, now that I've started getting to know the characters more, my favourite so far is definately Jayne, which I'm very surprised by because I really hated Adam Baldwin in Angel. Or maybe I just hated the Hamilton character, I'm not sure. But anyway, I like Jayne.
I thought The Train Job was good, probably better than Serenity, but I can't believe they aired it first, it must have made no sense, or at least very little sense.
I had a look on IMDb, and it said Serenity was aired after episode 10, and then episode 11, 12 and 13 not until 8 months later. No sense! There must have been some mightily confused viewers out there.
Anyway, I suppose I'd better go get some more of this assignment done...

In an interview, Joss Whedon said something like "I wanted Jayne to be untrustworthy and unlikeable. We failed. Jayne was untrustworthy and ADORABLE. And I blame it all on Adam!". And he's right. Jayne's just great!
I first saw Adam Baldwin in Full metal jacket, and even in that movie, although his character is just a total arse (Animal Mother), he was great in that role. Similar with Marcus Hamilton. He's just very good at playing bad guys. _________________ Listening to you I get the music
